Covered Layers of Generational Trauma
The concept of this piece unfolded and developed over the last year as I unlocked a trauma memory from around the age of 7. My shock state had set in and I would not eat or speak and this was due the a series of events involving my mother and the only person who seemed to be able to “bring me back” was my grandmother…
This work features three silhouettes with two different meanings one represents three generations, the child, mother, and grandmother. It also represents the inner child, adult self, and mother. The all-white represents change and a clean slate. The many layers of texture seen through the white highlights the deeply engrained trauma that lives in our lineage and acknowledging that no matter how much we clean over it some of the trauma will still show through. Trauma can show up in what you consider your good habits and certainly your undesirable ones.
