Beyond the Page: A Houston Visual Art Showcase Celebrating Storytelling, Healing, and Community

African American artist Houston Art show Houston artist Houston TX meaningful art Roxy Wuz Here Art

This past weekend, I had the privilege of curating Beyond the Page: A Visual Arts Showcase while exhibiting my own work alongside an extraordinary group of local artists. Hosted at Lit Java Coffee & Books in Pearland, Texas, the exhibition became more than an art show, it became a space for storytelling, healing, and authentic connection.

As an independent Houston art curator and visual artist, I believe every exhibition should do more than display artwork. It should create space for people to feel seen, heard, and connected.

During our artist conversation, we shared the stories behind our work and the life experiences that shaped it. The warmth in the room, the vulnerability, and the genuine conversations created a moment none of us realized we needed.

I’ve long believed that art tells the stories we sometimes cannot find the words to express. It reaches places language cannot, inviting reflection, empathy, and healing. As the evening unfolded, I could feel the energy shift. New connections were formed, conversations deepened, and the room was filled with light and possibility.

Experiences like this continue to affirm my purpose: art is one of the keys that unlocks the doors where I am meant to serve.

A heartfelt thank you to Lit Java owners, Dawana and Angie, for trusting the vision and continuing to create opportunities that celebrate local artists in Houston and Pearland. Thank you to every featured artist and every guest who helped transform this exhibition into a meaningful community experience.

Beyond the Page: A Visual Arts Showcase
reminded us that while literature tells a story through words, visual art reveals the emotions between the lines. Those stories don’t end when the exhibition closes, they continue through every person who experienced them.
